What is Hospice?
"Hospice is about Caring, not curing." According to the NHPCO, it is considered the model for quality compassionate care for people facing a life-limiting illness. Hospice provides expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support expressly tailored to the patient's needs and wishes. Support is provided to the patient's loved ones as well.

Hospice is a concept of care designed to provide comfort and support to patients and their families. Hospice is not a place. Most hospice care takes place at the patient's home, whether that is his or her own home, a family member's home, or a nursing or assisted living facility.

Why Hospice?

  • Patients may live longer under hospice care. A study published in the March 2007 issue of Journal of Pain and Sympton Management reports that hospice care may prolong the lives of some terminally ill patients. Among those studied, patients who chose hospice lived an average of one month longer than similar patients who did not choose hospice.
  • Hospice is the model for end-of-life care. Hospice is ideal for quality and compassionate care at the end of life. Hospice involves a team-oriented approach to expert medical care, pain management, as well as emotional and spiritual support tailored to meet the patient's and the family's needs.
  • Hospice focus is caring. Many patients experience pain and other distressing symptoms as illness progresses. Hospice staffs are trained to assess and treat all symptoms of pain and distress with exceptional hospice techniques. At the center of hospice is the belief that each patient has the right to die pain-free with dignity and that their families should receive the necessary emotional and spiritual support.
