Who is Hospice Appropriate?
Any patient who a physician certifies as "terminally ill" and has a prognosis less than 6 months given the natural course of their disease. There may be more specific criteria depending on the diagnosis of the patient. Patients may live longer than 6 months and still qualify for hospice care, as hospice services do not hasten the passing of a loved one.

Hospice Prognosis

Not all prognosis will have a life expectancy of 6 months or less. For a more complete or detailed documentation necessary for indicating a life expectancy of 6 months or less, please refer to your Medicare Intermediary. Members of the hospice Interdisciplinary Team, along with the Primary Physician, will make the final decision as to" prognosis appropriate for hospice."
